Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom Park                                                                     ©Disney

Things to Know:

  • This is a hard ticketed event, and Disney only sells so many tickets for this event. Guests do not require a park ticket to enter the party but do require an MNSSHP ticket. Depending on the number of tickets sold this could mean lower crowds.
  • On party days (listed below) the Magic Kingdom will close early, usually 7:00 p.m.,  asking guests without a party ticket to leave. If you don’t have a party ticket you may want to stay away from the Magic Kingdom on these days as you will not get to stay in the park the usual amount of time. However, the park may not be as crowded on party days if you plan on going to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary-Halloween Party at a later time during your stay.
  • You also will need a wristband or lanyard depending on what Disney does this year to stay in the park after it closes for the party. You can find these at the entrance of the park and usually in Tomorrowland if you are already in the park. Just ask a cast member if you need assistance.
  • MNSSHP is an allergy-friendly event. Don’t worry Disney is great about giving options to families with allergies so they can also enjoy the party.
  • Guests are encouraged to dress up for the event but check Disney’s official costume guidelines before going to the event.  Disney’s quick guidelines are below.
    • Guests 13 And Younger
      • Costumes and some masks may be worn, as long as the mask does not cover the entire face and eyes are visible
    • Guests 14 And Older
      • Layered costumes or costume props that surround the entire body are strongly discouraged and may be subject to additional security screening.
      • Costumes may not reach or drag on the ground. (e.g., full-length Princess dresses)
      • Capes may be worn if the length does not go below the waist.
      • Themed T-shirts, blouses, sweatshirts and hats are acceptable.
      • Acceptable accessories include transparent wings, plastic lightsabers, toy swords, and tutus. Headwear may be worn as long as it does not cover the face.
      • Masks of any kind may not be worn.

Party Tips:

  • Get to the party early: Disney usually starts letting guests into the park around 4:00 p.m. the evening of the party. Take advantage of this to get the most out of your ticket especially if you don’t have a park ticket to the Magic Kingdom that day. Also, if you get there early you may be able to get a few rides out of the way so you can spend more time taking part in the party festivities. Tip: You can book fasspasses in advance but they will need to be between 4:00-7:00 p.m. before the park officially closes for the Halloween party.
  • Find the Candy: Disney puts up pylons (big decorated cylindrical inflatables) at each candy location. So look for these as you walk through the park to find candy stations. Disney also puts up a pylon for allergy-friendly candy and treats, so if you or your kids have an allergy know that they can still enjoy the party also.
  • Get an Allergy-Friendly Bag: This is a must if anyone in your party has food allergies. Just see a Cast Member to pick up a teal-colored treat bag, and at each trick or treat location Cast Members will see the teal-colored bag and give a special token that can be redeemed at any allergy-friendly location. The official Allergy-Friendly Centers are located at Town Square Theater on Main Street, U.S.A. and Liberty Square Ticket Office.
  • Don’t waste time: Don’t waste too much time standing in line for rides. Get there early to tackle (make a few fastpasses if you can) the rides if you want, but enjoy the party and all the extra festivities. Rides will always be there. However, this year Disney is doing special music and lighting effects for some rides such as Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, and more, so try to catch these first if you will be focusing on rides during the party.
  • Go to the Later Parades and Shows: The early parades and shows seem to be the most crowded so if you can swing it go to the later shows.
  • Bring Your Own Candy Bags: The candy holders in the park are really cool and are $20, but there is no way they can hold the amount of candy you could get because it is a LOT!!! Be prepared with a cheaper, bigger, and foldable candy bag. There are lots of cheaper and more expensive option. The main point I want to make here is be prepared for lots of candy!!!
  • Check Out Party Specific Treats: Disney brings out several special treats at various eating establishments that are only available during MNSSHP. Relax and as you move through the park look for these special items as some of them are pretty unique. Some of the offerings from last year (2017)  are below.
      • Candy Corn Soft Serve Ice Cream

  • Go to the Earlier Parties in the Season: This is probably obvious but the early parties in August and September tend to be less crowded.  If you are going in October try to go to the parties not on the weekends as more local guests will attend.
  • You Can Book Dining During The Party: The Magic Kingdom on party night closes at 7 P.M. and so do the dining reservations via the normal way of booking. I did not realize at first that you could do this, but you can book dining reservations during the party as long as you have an MNSSHP ticket, but you have to go to a special page just for that located here.
  • Look for Exclusive Photopass Shots: Several Photopass shots are available during MNSSHP that aren’t available at any other time. Disney Parks Blog has posted several of the exclusive options available in the past.

Special Events During the Party:

  • Storybook Circus Disney Junior Jam (New in 2018): This will be a new trick or treat location where guests will get to dance with their favorite Disney Junior characters.
  • Hocus Pocus Villian Spectacular
    • Times: 7:40 P.M., 8:35 P.M., and 10:45 P.M.
    • This is a show available during MNSSHP and located on Cinderella’s castle stage with viewing from Main Street U.S.A. Guests will see the mischievous Sanderson Sisters from “Hocus Pocus” and other Disney villains perform musical numbers with special effects and fireworks. There are three show times with the last one usually being the least crowded.
  • Happy Hallowishes Fireworks:
    • Times: 10:15 P.M.
    • Duration: 12 minutes
    • Complete your MNSSHP experience with some of Disney’s greatest villains in a Halloween fireworks spectacular. With this show not be so “projection based” as Happily Ever After, this opens up viewing locations for this event. If you can’t get viewing locations in the Hub or Near Casey’s Corner then don’t fear, you won’t miss as much if you can’t see the castle perfectly. I’ve also read reports of people loving the view of the fireworks from Fantasyland.
  • Boo-To-You Halloween Parade:
    • Times: 9:15 P.M. and 11:15 P.M.
    • Duration: 20 minutes
    • Since Disney has gotten rid of the Main Street Electrical Parade there is no night time parade currently running at the Magic Kingdom. Take advantage of this and go see your favorite characters “spookified”.  See the parade route below. If the party is crowded or sold-out try Frontierland as a viewing area as I’ve found that it can be less crowded, but if the event seems to be less crowded you will probably be ok just choosing a spot anywhere.
