The simplicity of a popsicle is, in my opinion, one of the finer things in life, and especially on a hot afternoon when the sun is beating down on your face. Rewind a few years, as sweat starts to drip down your face and the heat overtakes you, and you realize that you are in the year 1900 when the electric freezer (invented in 1913) had not been invented, and locating a popsicle would be very hard to get since it hadn’t been invented yet either. My main point is that in a majority of the years of known human history the treat we know today as a popsicle would have been a luxury. Hints why in my opinions it’s one of the finer things in life. Now, popsicles are very commonplace, and our favorite spot to cool down and get a great popsicle is Steel City Pops. We are located near Huntsville, Al, and that is where we did this review. Nestled in the shops of Bridge Street Town Centre sits this amazing little popsicle shop. Steel City Pops is a small, family-owned business that has roots in Alabama. The first storefront opened in Homewood, Al in 2012 and they now have 23 locations across the South in Georgia, Texas, and Kentucky.
As soon as you walk in you notice the clean, modern, and urban feel with the nice wood grains that accent the walls and the vintage incandescent Edison bulbs lining the ceiling. However, the thing that stands out to us the most is the simplicity of the operation. It’s all about popsicles, except for the small refrigerator to the right of the entrance filled with bottled water and there’s a special story behind that. The owners wanted to give back so they began bottling and selling Provid water in their shops. All proceeds go to the nonprofit organization NeverThirst which supplies clean water to underdeveloped and third world countries.
Most of the popsicles are located in freezers just beside the checkout, and as soon as you make your decision on which popsicle you would like the attendant quickly grabs your selection and cuts the end off the plastic package and promptly hands you your treat. Simple.
The menus shown below consists of three categories of popsicles: Fruity Pops, Creamy Pops, and Cookie Pops. From their website all of their popsicles are as follows:
- Made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients when possible
- Made in small batches to ensure great flavor
- Made with organic ingredients when possible
- Sweetened with unrefined, organic cane sugar or honey
- Completely natural, we don’t use anything artificial, ever!
- Vegan options are available
They rotate their selection also based on what products they can source seasonally, so new flavors seem to always be available. Two of my favorite fruity pops are the Arnold Palmer which consists of sweet tea and lemonade and the strawberry lemonade, and the coconut and peach cream for the creamy pops. Don’t be afraid to try the flavor that you’re on the fence about. Try it and if you don’t like it they will replace it with another flavor at no extra charge.
As if the popcicles themselves weren’t enough, you can also get customized pops in which they can “Dip” your popsicle in milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate. After the “Dip” you can choose to “Dredge” your pop in various items such as cookie crumbs, peanuts, pecans, and sprinkles just to name a few. Then, as shown on the menu below, have your pop “Drizzled” again in chocolate and even “Dusted” with expresso and more. This makes your treat highly customizable. I recommend the coconut cream pie or the birthday cake to try, or just make one of your own designs.
So, if you have been searching for a great place with delicious popsicles or need a somewhere to literally chill this summer then you have to check out Steel City Pops! Go to their website and find the nearest location. You won’t be disappointed!
